With a focus on delivering compassionate care of the highest quality and safety for every patient, every time, Mount Nittany Health is proud to be nationally recognized with top honors in clinical care, patient safety and overall performance across the health system.

Most recently, Mount Nittany Medical Center was named as one of 350 US hospitals – and one of just 15 Pennsylvania hospitals – honored as a ‘World’s Best Hospital 2021’ by Newsweek Magazine.

“The 2,000 hospitals named in this list—which covers 25 countries, including United States, United Kingdom, Germany and Canada —stand out for their consistent excellence, including distinguished physicians, top-notch nursing care and state-of-the-art technology,” said Newsweek Global Editor-in-Chief, Nancy Cooper.

Results were calculated based on three data sources, including recommendations from medical experts (doctors, hospitals managers and healthcare professionals), results from patient surveys, and medical key performance indicators on hospitals. The Medical Center was noted as having an above average infection prevention rating.

In the last year, Mount Nittany Medical Center earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for quality care and patient safety. The lung cancer screening program and lung nodule program, located at the Medical Center, was designated a Screening Center of Excellence by Go2 Foundation for Lung Cancer and UPMC Health Plan for its ongoing commitment to responsible lung cancer screening. The Medical Center’s anticoagulation clinic again earned Anticoagulation Center of Excellence recertification from the Anticoagulation Forum (AC Forum).

“At Mount Nittany Health, community members can rely on exceptional care every day. The recognition we earn from outside raters are just a few of the achievements our remarkable team can be proud of, as they fulfill their commitment to providing outstanding care to our patients and community,” shares Kathleen Rhine, president and CEO, Mount Nittany Health.

CMS 5-Star Quality Rating System
With an overall national hospital average of 3 out of 5 stars, the Medical Center is one of only 14 hospitals in PA with 5 stars, and one of just over 400 in the US with this achievement.

The CMS ratings covers data from the previous year, and measures metrics in an average of seven areas, including mortality rates, readmission rates, safety of care, patient experience, efficient use of medical imaging, timeliness of care and effectiveness of care. Since 2016, the organization has published ratings of more than 4,000 Medicare-certified hospitals, with the intent to help patients select a provider based on performance in the aforementioned metrics.

The Medical Center also received three national quality awards for excellence in stroke care, including the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines® program: Stroke Gold Plus award, Get With The Guidelines® program: Target: Stroke™ Elite, and Get With The Guidelines® program: Target: Type 2 DiabetesSM Honor Roll, for excellence in care given to stroke patients that also have type 2 diabetes. Among just one percent of hospitals in the country, the Medical Center’s inpatient diabetes care earned advanced certification for excellence in care from The Joint Commission, and additionally, Mount Nittany Physician Group Endocrinology was named an accredited diabetes education program by the American Association of Diabetes Educators.

“Delivering quality healthcare to our region is the single most important contribution we make at Mount Nittany Health,” said Kristie Kaufman, MD, chair, Mount Nittany Medical Center Board of Trustees and Mount Nittany Physician Group provider. “These recognitions further illustrates what a vital community resource we have in the Medical Center.”

Mount Nittany Health takes pride in the excellence of care provided to its patients and the community. To learn more about Mount Nittany Health and the many ways the health system works to make people healthier, visit mountnittany.org.
