COVID-19 presurgical testing FAQ
    • Your surgeon/physician will provide you with an order and instructions for COVID-19 testing. This will need to be completed four business days prior to your procedure. COVID -19 testing is only available Monday through Friday (testing is NOT available over the weekend).

    • Your surgeon/physician will set up and provide you with specific instructions on the date, time and location of when to obtain COVID-19 testing. It is very important to arrive at this appointment on time. If it is missed, your procedure may be delayed or cancelled.

    • The COVID-19 testing MUST be completed before noon on your testing date, as results are time sensitive. Test results will be sent to your surgeon/physician and anesthesia team.

    • Please limit your exposure risk by social distancing in public, avoiding large groups and gatherings (greater than 10 people), wearing a mask in public, washing your hands frequently, avoiding contact with a person known to be positive for COVID-19 and limiting your activities to only those that are essential, including work. If your work requires you to interact with others, please carefully follow the safety measures at your workplace, such as social distancing and use of personal protective equipment, such as a mask, gloves, gowns, eye protection, etc., if applicable.

    • Avoid non-essential activities, such as social gatherings, eating in bars/restaurants, attending weddings, church and public events and engaging in unnecessary travel.

    • Non-essential traveling 14 days prior to your procedure is discouraged and may result in a delay or cancellation of your surgery/procedure. However, if you need to travel for work, please speak with your surgeon’s office/physician’s office and inform the nurse who will be contacting you for your PAT nurse interview.

    • Please notify your surgeon/physician or anesthesia team by telephone for further instructions if you develop any new symptoms, including fevers, cough, shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, abdominal pain, diarrhea or vomiting, OR if you have had a known exposure to anyone who is positive for COVID-19.

    • If you have any questions about these instructions and how to prepare for your upcoming surgery/procedure, please call the PAT office at 814.231.7050.

Our services

Mount Nittany Health Surgical Center offers a full range of elective outpatient surgical services performed by a skilled team of surgeons and healthcare professionals dedicated to providing exceptional, patient-focused care. We perform procedures in the following specialties:

Anesthesiology

Anesthesiology services include general, regional and local anesthesia. Provided by board-certified anesthesiologists at the Surgical Center, anesthesia prevents the patient from feeling pain during procedures or surgery.

Cosmetic and reconstructive surgery

Plastic and reconstructive surgeons specialize in restoring or reconstructing the human body. From burns and injuries to congenital birth defects, reconstructive surgery can restore function and confidence for those afflicted with a disfiguring disease or injury.

Cosmetic surgery is also for those seeking to improve their appearance. We offer a number of aesthetic procedures and surgeries, including injectables, body contouring, rhinoplasty, breast augmentation and facial rejuvenations.

Ear, nose & throat (ENT)

The Surgical Center is home to some of the country's premiere ENT specialists. Our world-class team of ENT surgeons provides the most advanced treatments and procedures to help our patients achieve their best-possible health.

Services include advanced tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy procedures, bilateral myringotomy and tubes, InstaTrak® and endoscopic sinus surgeries, nasal fractures and more.

Additionally, the Surgical Center now offers a new surgical technology: Balloon Sinuplasty™. This procedure allows the sinuses to be opened by placing a small, flexible balloon into the blocked pathway. Once in place, the balloon is inflated, gently opening the sinus pathway and helping to restore function and normal sinus drainage. It is then deflated and removed, alleviating sinus pressure and discomfort for the patient.

General surgery

We offer a full range of elective same-day surgeries and procedures, including hernias (inguinal and umbilical), breast biopsies and needle localization, A-Port insertion, vein stripping, minor excisions and many others.

Gynecology

A full range of same-day gynecological surgical procedures is offered, including dilation and curettage with hysteroscopy, diagnostic and operative laparoscopy, laparoscopic tubal sterilization, NovaSure® ablation and Monarc transvaginal sling treatments.

Ophthalmology

The Surgical Center offers some of the most advanced outpatient ophthalmic procedures in the country. Services include argon laser for glaucoma, strabismus surgery, lacrimal duct probing, dacryocystorhinostomy, minor plastic procedures such as entropion/ectropion repairs and more.

Additionally, with a state-of-the-art Storz Millennium™ Microsurgical System, the Surgical Center offers one of the latest, most popular procedures in ophthalmology today: cataract phacoemulsification. Called “phaco” for short, this procedure uses ultrasonic vibrations to liquefy the inner-ocular lens, which is then removed with a suction tube. A new, artificial lens (called an intraocular lens, or IOL) is put in its place. Compared to traditional surgery, phaco is a highly accurate procedure that reduces trauma to the eye, producing amazing results with virtually no pain.

Oral surgery

Oral surgical services include impacted wisdom teeth extraction, gingival cysts surgery and many others.

Orthopedics

The latest orthopedic and arthroscopic procedures are performed at the Surgical Center to provide patients with less-invasive, less-painful solutions for muscle and joint problems. Services include knee and shoulder arthroscopies, ACL repairs, carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger and more.

Pain management

Board-certified pain management physicians provide safe, fast procedures at the Surgical Center to help patients manage pain and get on with their lives. Our physicians offer the latest in intrathecal and epidural infusion, disk procedures, facial pain and spinal cord stimulation.

We also offer pain management services through our pain management program.

Podiatry

Surgical podiatry services include bunionectomy, hammertoe correction, ankle arthroscopy, plantar fasciectomy, plantar warts extraction and more.

Urology

The Surgical Center offers several urological services, including lithotripsy, vasectomy, hydroceles, circumcision and other elective urological procedures.

We also offer one of the latest, most advanced methods in the fight against prostate cancer: brachytherapy. This internal radiation treatment is delivered by placing radioactive material (seeds) directly into a tumor or close to it. Compared to traditional methods involving repeated treatments of external radiation therapy, this one-time procedure allows a high dose of radiation to attack the cancer while minimizing damage to surrounding organs and tissues. Patients experience relatively little pain and can go home the same day.

LenSx® Laser surgery

For those who have trouble seeing without lenses or contacts, Mount Nittany Health is pleased to offer LenSx laser surgery, an outpatient procedure offered at Mount Nittany Health Surgical Center.

LenSx uses a femtosecond laser to help with the removal of cataracts. A femtosecond laser emits “optical pulses,” with durations that are between femtoseconds and hundreds of femtoseconds.

The laser allows the surgeon to make very precise incisions during surgery. Benefits include improved accuracy and precision for ophthalmologists performing the surgery, which has resulted in greater accuracy and safety compared to traditional cataract surgery.
